The three most prominent MLB players to retire after 2023 were Miguel Cabrera, Nelson Cruz, and Adam Wainwright, the starting pitcher for the Cardinals.

Wainwright, 42, had a dismal final season in the Major Leagues, finishing 5-11 with a 7.40 ERA and 83 earned runs in 101 innings. 

Wainwright did, however, produce a masterpiece in his final appearance, pitching seven scoreless innings against the Brewers on September 18, earning his 200th career victory.

With five victories by the conclusion of 2023, Wainwright ranked sixth among pitchers in the game.

In the meantime, the two sluggers who had the most home runs among active hitters by the end of 2023 also decided to retire. 

Miguel Cabrera ended his amazing career in 2023, having hit 3,174 hits in his career, won a World Series in his rookie season, and blasted 511 home runs.

Nelson Cruz retired as well, having blasted 464 home runs in his career. The 43-year-old is currently an adviser with the Dodgers organization.

Two-time All-Star Zack Britton, four-time Gold Glove winner Andrelton Simmons, and Trevor May were among the other prominent MLB players to retire in 2023. With the A’s in 2023, May recorded a career-high 21 saves.

Veteran reliever Joe Smith announced his official retirement from baseball on January 31, 2024. Smith’s Twins career ended in 2022 when he last threw.

Corey Kluber, the two-time AL Cy Young Award winner, announced his retirement on February 9. Throughout 55 innings in his final season with the Red Sox, Kluber had a 7.04 ERA.

Eric Hosmer, a former All-Star, retired on February 21. 198 home runs, 1,753 hits, and four Gold Gloves were Hosmer’s final stats.

Josh Donaldson, the former MVP of the AL, retired on March 4.

MLB transactions page disclosed Nationals standout Stephen Strasburg’s retirement on April 6. In 2022, Strasburg, who has experienced nerve damage, made his final MLB appearance.
